Wrapping up Tenderloin Ministry & Heading to Tacoma June 1 with the team

My team is wrapping up our time in the Tenderloin district! It has been a growing experience for all of us and I am grateful for the time. It has been a privilege to serve here this month even though we did not have formal opportunities to use or teach what we learned in counseling school within the community; we did use our counseling skills/tools within our team as we encountered challenges ourselves! :) I've met some great people and seen the Lord open the eyes of my own heart in new ways, as well as open the eyes of other people hearts to his love for them.

Thank you to everyone who prayed and gave financially toward the gentleman that needed new shoes; within one day after my last blog post, I had the opportunity to ask him about his shoe size and the financial need was covered to purchase the shoes too. God is so good! The gentleman was very thankful for the shoes and said to say thank you to those that helped get them for him.

We are headed to Tacoma, Washington on June 1 to serve at the church Freedom River Outreach. That first Saturday in Tacoma, my team is hosting a morning seminar at the church, which will look similar to the teaching ministry day we did while we were still in Hawaii.

Ministry in the Tenderloin District

Thank you for your prayers and support! After our first weekend in San Francisco, we learned that the rooms we were renting at the YWAM base each weekend in May, are in reality reserved for us every day the entire month; my outreach team is now living in the Tenderloin District for the whole month of May!

We are still working to find counseling related ministries here, but in the meantime have been serving at the food pantry on Thursdays, walking around the district streets on Friday nights and some other evenings passing out hot chocolates, and serving coffee/cookies on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. The YWAM base is one of only two shower facilities in the entire city for the houseless, they are open MWF for 3 hours, so people can enjoy hot coffee/cookies before or after their shower.

I feel a bit disappointed that we are still struggling so much to find counseling related ministries, but I am certainly seeing the Lord at work in my own life, my team members and also in interactions we have had with YWAM San Francisco staff, volunteers, and a few people we have met on the streets. I had the blessing of being able to pray for several people; also there is one middle aged man who is houseless that I have made a connection with. This man has only been on the streets a few months and I have seen him offer SO MUCH kindness and generosity toward many people (others living on the street, YWAM staff, myself).

I noticed today that he has worn a hole through the bottom of his shoes; I would like to bless him by buying another pair of good/sturdy/warm new shoes or hiking boots. Would you like to join me in blessing this man? Pray that I would have an opportunity to ask him what size shoes he wears, if he has any special footwear needs and that he would not be ashamed to receive. I don't know how much it would cost yet but I estimate $100-$150, so if you would like to give financially toward this specific purchase that would also be super helpful!

Prayer Requests
  1. Special Prayer Request: For a gentle, kind middle aged man that I met on the street; he spends the majority of his day sitting/walking on the sidewalk just outside the YWAM base windows. Pray that his physical needs would continue to be met, the housing he is waiting for in a nearby are would open and his heart would be softened toward the gospel of Jesus.
  2. Outreach team unity and communication!!! (We are making good progress but its still a big need)
  3. Ministry connections for June- three from my team are going to Tacoma Washington; I'm still waiting on the Lord for direction about staying in California someplace or if I will join them in Tacoma.
  4. That our hearts would be sensitive and submitted to the Lord for the work He is doing in and through us in this outreach season.
  5. Good physical mental, emotional and spiritual health/strength to push though when it is hard...but wisdom to know when/how to rest.
Praise Reports
  1. My known outreach expenses are covered! Any funds coming in now will be used toward unexpected expenses that come up or saved to be put toward expenses that I know I will have after outreach is done.
  2. Housing for May is all set.
  3. God has provided a connection with someone who sounds like they will be a great fit to sublease my space in the condo where I live in Kona while I am gone on outreach.

Outreach In Cali

The God of Love Cares workshop that my team in Kona, HI did on Saturday April 24 was awesome! We worked really great as a team and it was so evident that many of the participants were impacted with God's personal love toward them.

On Monday, we had our first ministry day as California team. We hosted an activity call "Heart Art"in the trailer park where two of my classmates live.  Heart art provides an opportunity for people to share, through creativity and verbally, about things that make them happy and also things that are challenging.

A piece of my heart art

Tomorrow (Thursday) we head in to San Francisco as a team to serve all day Thursday and Friday in the Tenderloin district. We will be passing out food, giving out hot chocolate, participating in a mother's day celebration and praying with people. Half of the day on Saturday we will get to spend time with a counselor on staff at the San Fran YWAM base; she will teach us about how to apply a tool we learned in Kona to this specific context of homelessness and prostitution, so we will be more equipped to use it proficiently when we return to San Fran the following week.

Please keep us in your prayers these next few days as this is a new experience for everyone on the team; we are really excited and expectant for God to work in and through us, but also a bit nervous.

  • Pray that God would fill us with His love for those we get to meet and that we would be courageous to express that love in whatever way He shows us to!
  • Safety for us and those we will encounter
  • Out pouring of the Holy Spirit, that peoples lives/hearts/minds would be touch with the healing/resurrecting, redeeming, freeing/transforming power of Christ.

Prayer Requests
  1. Outreach team unity and communication.
  2. Ministry connections for last week of May and June
  3. That our hearts would be sensitive and submitted to the Lord for the work He is doing in and through us in this outreach season.
  4. Good physical mental, emotional and spiritual health/strength to push though when it is hard...but wisdom to know when/how to rest.

  2. For the first 3 weeks of May housing and ministry is mostly organized!
  3. Smooth travel to Cali and wonderful people to host us for the days we are not in San Fran
  4. God has provided a connection with someone who sounds like they will be a great fit to sublease my space in the condo where I live in Kona while I am gone on outreach.

Outreach in Kona

Hike at Captain Cook
Outreach in Kona has begun! We are preparing to lead a half day workshop for next Saturday (April 24); it will include us teaching topics/tools we have learned these past 3 months to other people and also giving them applications opportunities with these tools too. The overall theme is: The God of Love, Cares and some topics/tools to be covered include origins of suffering, lamenting, and Immanuel Journaling.

Right now, we are taking time to reach out to people here in Kona who might be interested in coming to the workshop or who might like us to bring a piece of the workshop teaching to them. Twice a week we meet as team to pray and worship together and to hone our abilities in applying tools/skills we learned with each other ,so we are more confident in using them to help others outside our class when God gives us the opportunity.

my roommate :))
Me and two others students fly to Oakland, CA on April 29 to join a few from our team already there. In the morning, May 1 we will participate in a small prayer gathering in Santa Rosa. For the first 3 weeks of May we have a ministry commitment to serve in San Fransisco in the Tenderloin district at Mission Adventures! We will be learning how to apply a tool call Immanuel Process with a community where homelessness and prostitution are common. We are really excited to go and join this ministry in bringing the love of Jesus to their local community.

Please join us in praying for this community as we prepare to go and also for where God is leading us to serve the last week of May. The month of June is still unknown for me and one other students; join us in praying for Gods clarity and leading.

Prayer Requests
  1. Outreach team unity!
  2. Still hoping to raise a bit more financial support to cover my outreach expeneses
  3. Transportation, housing and ministry connection for outreach in Northern Cali for last week of May and possibly into June
  4. That our hearts would be sensitive and submitted to the Lord for the work He is doing in and through us in this outreach season.
  5. Good physical mental, emotional and spiritual health/strength to push though when it is hard...but wisdom to know when/how to rest.

Praise Reports

  1. For the first 3 weeks of May housing and ministry is mostly organized!
  2. Continued opportunities to rest as we begin outreach and seeing some good team unity as we plan/prepare for a teaching/application workshop we will host on Saturday April 24
  3. God has provided a connection with someone who sounds like they will be a great fit to sublease my space in the condo where I live in Kona while I am gone on outreach.

Lecture Completed, Rest and Beginning of Outreach

 Hello Family and Friends,

My apologies that I have not written a post for over a month! These past few weeks have been very busy with receiving teaching, doing homework, and completing individual and group final exam papers/projects/presentations. Lecture phase for the counseling school is officially completed; me and the other students are looking forward to outreach and very thankful that we are taking this week to rest before jumping into it, starting on April 5th. 😊

Being prayed for by staff before I presented/taught as part of a
final project
"It is in loving connections with safe people
that we become who we are designed to be."
(Joyful Journey p.11)

The outreach team that I am part of (me and two other students) will be here in Kona until April 29th and then we are flying to Northern California (Bay Area) to continue outreach there for the month of May. We plan to meet up with a married couple that were also students in our class and are starting their outreach in the Bay Area because that is where they are from and two staff that need to go see family before the can join us for outreach in Cali.  I would like to stay in Cali until the end of outreach on June 18th, but we also have a ministry connection in Tacoma, WA that we are praying about for the last few weeks.

Please pray with us about our housing, transportation and ministry connection in Cali as this has not all fallen into place yet!

Prayer Requests

  1. Outreach team unity!
  2. Transportation, housing and ministry connection for outreach in Northern Cali
  3. That our hearts would be sensitive and submitted to the Lord for the work He is doing in and through us in this outreach season.
  4. Good physical mental, emotional and spiritual health/strength to push though when it is hard...but wisdom to know when/how to rest.

Praise Reports

  1. We have plane tickets to California! And we have some leads on housing and ministry opportunities.
  2. Much needed week of rest for me and the other students.
  3. God has provided a connection with someone who sounds like they will be a great fit to sublease my space in the condo where I live in Kona while I am gone on outreach.

Freedom, Fun, Fellowship, Future

Scripture Art Prayer
(Psalm 119:105 & Psalm 1)

It has been a great quarter so far! One more month of training/lecture phase and then we outreach April-June. The past two months I've learned a lot about myself, my classmates and feel like I am being equipped with really great tools for ministering to others. As a class we are experiencing the effectiveness of God working through the tools we learn each week, as we practice using them by ministering to each other.

Outreach locations are not yet finalized, but right now it looks like I will stay in Kona for April and head to Northern California for May and June. Possible ministry opportunities during the first month in Kona might be: facilitating scripture based trauma healing groups in the broader Kona community and facilitating Immanuel Journaling groups and issue focused RTF sessions to minister to the incoming YWAM DTS students for the April quarter. I feel really excited about these things and also the way God has been guiding us individually and as a group for outreach possibilities!

Prayer Requests

  1. Continued open heart and mind to receive all the Lord wants to teach during the training phase of FBC and open eyes to see how He wants us to begin applying it to serve others! (For me and my classmates) 😊
  2. Clarity about outreach locations and ministry opportunities for both FBC students and staff
  3. Good physical health and mental, emotional and spiritual strength to push though when it is hard...but wisdom for when rest is what is actually needed!

Praise Reports
  1. Me and my classmate are continuing to grow and clearly see God at work in our lives; I am also having very clear opportunities to apply/practice what God has been teaching me these past couple years.
  2. Classmates/friends and I saw whales quite close to shore line this weekend, so fun! 🐋

January Update

Christmas Travel

My time back in Michigan visiting my parents was very good and we zoomed with my other siblings on Christmas Eve. I enjoyed seeing some friends too! A Christmas Eve bonfire in the parking lot with my home church La Casa de Mi Padre and our friends from Real Life Fellowship church was beautiful.

Visiting my YWAM friends in Northern California was also a wonderful experience. I made connections with a few other YWAMers they are friends with, got to meet some of their extended family, meet a lovely family they are close with from church and was blessed immensely by words of the Lord given to me by a pastor from their church; this pastor had never met me before (he didn't even know my name) but God gave him some very special and specific words to speak to me that resonate completely with what I already believe God has been doing in my life and what He is going to do even more in this season.

Flying to Cali

Friends in California

Back in Kona

  • I have started organizing a garden plot where I hope to apply what I have been learning on the campus natural farm and grow some of my own veggies/fruit; if I'm successful I'll share some of what I grow with friends and I hope to teach/invite others to garden with me!
  • I helped the campus medical staff on January 12th with testing of students who had arrived on the 7th; as a precaution the campus mandated a quarantine for 5 days and a third COVID tests for all incoming students.
  • The Foundations of Biblical Counseling (FBC) course has begun! I'm getting to know the 11 other students and 7 staff; last week we received an overview of what we will learn in depth in the coming months and each shared 10-15 testimonies. This week we started by learning about how culture is important to consider in a counseling setting, Tues-Thursday we are learning an overview of basic counseling skills and practicing them with each other.; also doing group discussions about what we are reading in the assigned books.

Books for the FBC course:

I have already read this book once
and it is good!

This teaches a great prayer journaling
tool called Immanuel Journaling
First time reading the book for me but I've used the journalling tool lots!

Prayer Requests

  1. Continued open heart and mind to receive all the Lord wants to teach me during the training phase of FBC and open eyes to see how He wants me to begin applying it to serve others!

Praise Reports

  1. My travels from Kona to Michigan to California and back to Kona were great (negative COVID tests, no problems with my ears, good sleep after time zone changes...these last two are miraculous I think!)
  2. Already having opportunity to grow and clearly seeing things God wants to work on in me and the course has just begun; also very clear opportunities to apply/practice what God has been teaching me these past couple years.
